Tal's big day with the metabolic specialist started off with a quick check up and a conversation regarding his milktest. Luckily, as far as I could tell, he was doing great on the whole milk- with no side effects or tummy troubles. But, I was still anxious to get back the results of his bloodtest. After enduring a grueling few minutes of my baby boy screaming as the nurse struggled to find a vein, we were off.
Playing before seeing the doctor
I was expecting to hear back from the lab within about 3 days, so I was confused when I was contacted by the hospital the moment we got off the plane in Knoxville. Here was our conversation:
me: Hello???
nurse: Hi! This is _______ from the lab.
me: (thinking his test had come back with something terribly wrong) Is something wrong with Tal's bloodwork?
nurse: Well, yes... we are going to need you to come back in today to have blood drawn again
me: Why?...I can't... I am not even in the state of TX...
nurse: the blood was not handled properly. To perform the test needed to evaluate his levels the blood needed to be spun immediately and processed within 12 hours of blood draw and that didn't happen
me: (ticked off and trying not to yell at the poor soul on the other end who obviously drew the short straw and had to make the call) Well, ma'am, you would think that a hospital would know how to properly treat blood. He has been on dairy for 10 days now and if it is affecting him, I need to know sooner than later
nurse: I am so sorry, when can you bring him back in
me: not for another week- which means he will need to be on milk for another 7 days- so the hospital better hope that his bloodwork comes back normal or you will have a lawsuit on your hands...
you get the point.... anyway fast forward 7 days... we took Tal back in for another blood draw and we were treated like ROYALTY! Post-its were all over our file, and being the nosey person that I am, I read them. One read :DO NOT LEAVE UNATTENDED!, another read: GET PATIENT BACK IMMEDIATELY! I just wished one read: GIVE MOM AND DAD A MUCH NEEDED BACK RUB!! After giving Tal and Ava toys, stickers, and pretty much anything they wanted, we were promised that his blood would be processed IMMEDIATELY!
So... no news yet...but we are hopeful that all will be fine and Talmage will be a soy boy no more!!
